What is a beej mantra?

A beej (seed) mantra is a short mantra built around one-syllable seed sounds such as ह्रां or श्रीं. Each of the nine planets of Vedic astrology, the Navagraha, has its own beej mantra, which tradition treats as the sound-form of that planet's energy.

Every Navagraha beej mantra follows the same pattern: Om, three seed syllables, the syllable सः (sah), and a salutation to the planet, such as शनैश्चराय नमः, "salutations to Shani".

Which Navagraha mantra should you chant?

In Vedic numerology each planet rules one number from 1 to 9. Many people chant the mantra of the planet that rules their Mulank (birth day number) or Bhagyank (destiny number); you can find both with our Mulank and Bhagyank calculator.

In astrology, the mantra of a weak or troubled planet in the horoscope, or of the planet whose mahadasha is running, is also commonly chanted. Traditions differ, so follow your family's practice or a teacher you trust.
