About the Shani Chalisa

It describes Shani's form, dark and four-armed with a mace, trident and axe, and his ten names, among them Kona, Pingala, Krishna, Saura and Manda. It then retells how his influence touched Rama's exile, Ravana's fall, King Vikramaditya, Harishchandra, Nala, the Pandavas and even the beheading of Ganesha, showing that his glance can turn a king into a beggar and a beggar into a king.

Later verses give the astrological lore of his seven vehicles and four metal 'feet', from the elephant that brings Lakshmi to the dog that warns of theft, and promise that whoever reads it regularly is never troubled by a bad Saturn period.

How the Shani Chalisa is traditionally recited

  • Read it on Saturdays, ideally in the evening, facing west, after lighting a lamp of sesame or mustard oil.
  • Chaupai 39 speaks of offering water to a peepal tree and donating a lamp on Saturdays.
  • It is especially read during Sade Sati and Dhaiya, and on Shani Amavasya and Shani Jayanti; the closing doha speaks of reading it for forty days.
  • Black sesame, urad dal, mustard oil and iron are traditional offerings and donations for Saturn.
