O mind, worship the merciful Shri Ramachandra, who removes the terrible fear of worldly life: his eyes, face, hands and feet are like fresh red lotuses, his beauty surpasses countless Kamadevas, he is dark as a new rain cloud and his yellow robe shines like lightning. Tulsidas sings of the friend of the humble, the Sun to the demon clans, the joy of the Raghus and son of Dasharatha, crowned and armed with bow and arrows, victor over Khara and Dushana, and asks him to dwell in the lotus of his heart and destroy desire and the other enemies within.

About the Shri Ram Chalisa
Much of it is about the power of Rama's name: Ganesha became the first to be worshipped by taking it, Shesha bears the earth as lightly as a flower by chanting it, Bharata and Shatrughna draw their strength from it, and the four Vedas call it boundless.
It praises Sita as Lakshmi incarnate, with the nine treasures and eighteen siddhis at her feet, and Rama as the formless, eternal Brahman who is also the beloved son of Dasharatha. The last verses promise knowledge, freedom from rebirth and a place in Vaikuntha to whoever reads it, and suggest reading it for seven days with tulsi leaves and flowers.
How the Shri Ram Chalisa is traditionally recited
- Bathe and sit before an image of Ram Darbar, with a lamp, tulsi leaves and flowers; chaupai 42 speaks of offering tulsi and flowers.
- It is read on Ram Navami, through Chaitra Navratri, on Thursdays and on Ekadashi.
- The first closing doha suggests reading it as a rule for seven days.
- In astrology Rama, born in the Sun's dynasty, is worshipped for the Sun (Surya).
