Tulsidas hails Hanuman, the auspicious son of the Wind who uproots everything inauspicious, friend of the saintly, in whose heart Rama lives. Bowing to his parents, guru, Ganesha, Saraswati, Shiva and Parvati and the sages, he asks for lasting love for Rama's feet, and bows to Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, dearest to him.
About the Hanuman Chalisa
The name comes from chalis, the Hindi word for forty. Two dohas (couplets) open the hymn, forty chaupais praise Hanuman's strength, wisdom and devotion to Shri Ram, and a closing doha asks him to dwell in the reader's heart.
The verses recall episodes from the Ramayana, such as Hanuman finding Sita in Lanka, burning the city and bringing the Sanjeevani herb to save Lakshman, and describe him as Sankat Mochan, the remover of fear and trouble.
How the Hanuman Chalisa is traditionally recited
- Bathe first and sit in a clean, quiet place, ideally before an image of Hanuman or of Ram, Sita and Lakshman.
- Tuesday and Saturday are the traditional days, but many people read it every morning or evening.
- A lamp of ghee or sesame oil, red flowers and sindoor are common offerings.
- On special days such as Hanuman Jayanti, or in a difficult time, some devotees read it 7, 11 or 108 times; chaupai 38 speaks of reciting it a hundred times.
- In astrology it is commonly recited for Mars (Mangal) and Saturn (Shani), and during Sade Sati.
