Chalisas

What is a chalisa?

A chalisa is a devotional hymn of forty verses; the name comes from chalis, the Hindi word for forty. Most are written in chaupai metre, with a doha or two at the start and the end. The Hanuman Chalisa by Goswami Tulsidas is the best known.

A chalisa is meant to be recited, not just read: many people read one daily, or on the day of the week linked with the deity, often in front of a lamp.

Chalisa and the planets

In astrology, chalisas are also recited for the planets. The Hanuman Chalisa, for example, is commonly read for Mars and Saturn. Each chalisa page lists the planets it is linked with and their beej mantras.

Mantras and chalisas are a matter of faith and tradition, and practices differ between families and teachers. Nothing here replaces medical, legal or financial advice.

Chalisa FAQs

What does chalisa mean?

Chalisa comes from chalis, the Hindi word for forty. A chalisa is a hymn of forty verses, usually with a doha or two at the start and end.

Is it better to read a chalisa or chant a mantra?

Both are traditional. A chalisa is a hymn of praise that anyone can read in Hindi, while a beej mantra is a short formula repeated many times. Many people do both, such as the Hanuman Chalisa with the Mangal or Shani mantra.
