Glory to Shiva, the sound Om, in whom Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiva are one. The aarti describes his forms with one, four and five faces, riding the swan, Garuda and the bull; his rosaries and garlands, the moon on his brow, the trident and the kamandalu; and says only the unwise think the three gods separate, for in Om they are one. Whoever sings it, says Swami Shivanand, gains what the heart desires.
About the Shiv Chalisa
It begins by saluting Ganesha and then describes Shiva's form: the crescent moon on his forehead, the Ganga in his matted hair, the serpents, the tiger skin and the trident, with Parvati, Ganesha, Kartikeya and Nandi beside him.
The middle verses recall his deeds: sending Kartikeya to slay Tarakasura, destroying Jalandhara and Tripura, granting Bhagiratha the Ganga, drinking the poison from the churning of the ocean to become Neelkanth, and testing Vishnu's devotion with a thousand lotuses. The last verses ask Shiva to remove the reader's troubles and describe the blessings of reciting it.
How the Shiv Chalisa is traditionally recited
- Bathe and sit facing a Shiva linga or image, ideally in the morning; the closing doha asks for the Chalisa to be read daily on rising.
- Monday is Shiva's day. Many people read it through the month of Shravan, on Pradosh (Trayodashi) evenings and on Maha Shivaratri.
- Offer water or milk, bel leaves, white flowers, a lamp and incense; verse 39 mentions dhoop, deep and naivedya.
- In astrology Shiva is worshipped for the Moon, and for relief in difficult Saturn and Rahu periods.

FAQ
Shiv Chalisa FAQs
Who wrote the Shiv Chalisa?
The poet names himself as Ayodhyadas in the first doha and the last chaupai. His dates are not recorded, and the hymn is treated as a traditional text.
When should the Shiv Chalisa be read?
At any time with a clean body and calm mind, ideally in the morning. Mondays, the month of Shravan, Pradosh evenings and Maha Shivaratri are especially associated with Shiva.
What does Neelkanth mean in the Shiv Chalisa?
Blue-throated. When the ocean was churned, a deadly poison rose and Shiva drank it to save the gods and demons; it stayed in his throat and turned it blue.
Can the Shiv Chalisa be read for Pradosh Vrat?
Yes. Verses 37 and 38 speak of worship and fasting on Trayodashi, the day of Pradosh Vrat, and reading the Chalisa in the evening puja is common.
