About the Krishna Chalisa

It opens with Krishna's form: the flute, the dark cloud-coloured body, the peacock-feather crown, the yellow silk and the Vaijayanti garland. It then calls on him to come again, lift the mountain and protect his devotees.

The verses walk through his leelas: Putana and the demons of Gokul, swallowing the forest fire, lifting Govardhan against Indra's rain, showing the universe in his mouth to Yashoda, subduing Kaliya, the Raas, slaying Kansa, Sudama's rice, Vidura's simple greens, driving Arjuna's chariot and teaching the Gita, saving Meera and Draupadi. It closes with a plea to remove the reader's faults and grant darshan.

How the Krishna Chalisa is traditionally recited

  • Bathe and sit before an image of Krishna or Radha-Krishna, with a lamp, tulsi leaves and a little butter or misri.
  • It is read on Janmashtami, on Ekadashi and on Wednesdays, and daily by many devotees.
  • The closing doha promises the eight siddhis, nine treasures and four aims of life to those who read it with devotion.
  • In astrology Krishna (Vishnu) is worshipped for Mercury, and for the Moon as the darling of Yashoda and the gopis.
