Chandra Beej Mantra: Meaning and How to Chant
The seed mantra of Moon, traditionally chanted on Monday, with its meaning and a verse from the Navagraha Stotra.
ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्रमसे नमः॥
Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandramase Namah
Meaning of the Chandra beej mantra
- ॐ (Om) is the primordial sound with which most Vedic mantras begin.
- श्रां श्रीं श्रौं (Shraam Shreem Shraum) are beej (seed) syllables. They are not translated word for word; tradition treats them as the sound-form of Moon's energy, and सः (sah) seals the invocation.
- चन्द्रमसे नमः (Chandramase Namah) means "salutations to Chandra".
Why the Chandra mantra is chanted
Chandra, the Moon, rules the mind and emotions in Vedic astrology. The Chandra beej mantra is traditionally chanted for a calm and steady mind, restful sleep, emotional balance and a good bond with one's mother, especially when the Moon is weak or afflicted.
