Shani beej mantra

ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं सः शनैश्चराय नमः॥

Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah

Meaning of the Shani beej mantra

  • ॐ (Om) is the primordial sound with which most Vedic mantras begin.
  • प्रां प्रीं प्रौं (Praam Preem Praum) are beej (seed) syllables. They are not translated word for word; tradition treats them as the sound-form of Saturn's energy, and सः (sah) seals the invocation.
  • शनैश्चराय नमः (Shanaishcharaya Namah) means "salutations to Shani".

Why the Shani mantra is chanted

Shani, or Saturn, is the planet of discipline, hard work, justice and delay. The Shani beej mantra is traditionally chanted for patience and perseverance, steady progress after delays, and relief during Sade Sati, Dhaiya or a difficult Shani mahadasha.

Shani verse from the Navagraha Stotra

This verse to Shani comes from the Navagraha Stotra attributed to the sage Vyasa. Many people recite it before or after the beej mantra.

नीलाञ्जनसमाभासं रविपुत्रं यमाग्रजम्।छायामार्तण्डसम्भूतं तं नमामि शनैश्चरम्॥Nilanjana-samabhasam Ravi-putram YamagrajamChhaya-Martanda-sambhutam tam namami Shanaishcharam
I bow to Shanaishchara, dark like blue collyrium (kohl), the son of the Sun and elder brother of Yama, born of Chhaya and Martanda (the Sun).

How the Shani mantra is traditionally chanted

  • Day: begin on a Saturday, the day of Saturn.
  • Count: the commonly cited total is 23,000 repetitions, about 213 rounds of a 108-bead mala, usually spread over many days.
  • Daily practice: many people simply chant one round of 108 every day, or every Saturday.
  • Chant after bathing, in a clean and quiet place, with your attention on the sound.

Saturday is its day, and evening is the traditional time. Many light a sesame-oil lamp under a peepal tree or at a Shani temple, wear black or dark blue, and also read the Hanuman Chalisa, since tradition holds that Shani does not trouble Hanuman's devotees.

Shani mantra and your Mulank

In numerology Saturn rules the number 8: Mulank 8, for people born on 8, 17 and 26 of any month, and Bhagyank 8. People with these numbers often chant the Shani mantra to strengthen the planet's good qualities.

Also traditionally recited for Saturn: Hanuman Chalisa, Shani Chalisa, Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra and Navagraha Stotram.
