How Guna Milan works

The Ashtakoota system compares the two Moons, the most personal point in a Vedic chart, through eight lenses. Each has a weight, from Varna (1 point) to Nadi (8 points), adding up to 36. The heavier factors matter more: Nadi relates to health and children, Bhakoot to family welfare and Gana to temperament.

The two big doshas

Nadi dosha occurs when both Moons fall in the same nadi, and Bhakoot dosha when the Moon signs are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart. Each removes the full points of its koota, which is why a couple can score well overall yet still be asked to look closer. Tradition lists exceptions that soften each dosha; the report notes them when they apply.

Mangal dosha

Separate from the 36 points, many families check Mangal (Mars) dosha: Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. It is traditionally considered balanced when both partners have it.

Matching is a tradition for reflection, not a verdict on any relationship; respect and communication matter more than any score. See each partner's full chart in the Vedic birth chart calculator, or compare numbers in Mulank compatibility.

FAQ

Kundli matching FAQs

What is kundli matching?

Kundli matching, or Guna Milan, is the traditional Vedic way of checking marriage compatibility. It compares the two partners' Moon signs and birth stars (nakshatras) across eight factors, the Ashtakoota, worth 36 points in total.

What is a good Guna Milan score?

Traditionally 18 out of 36 is the minimum for an acceptable match, 24–27 is good and 28 or more is excellent. Astrologers also look at which kootas score zero, especially Nadi and Bhakoot, and at Mangal dosha, rather than the total alone.

Why are the partners called bride and groom?

Classical texts score two kootas, Varna and Gana, from the bride's and groom's side. We keep the traditional sides so scores match what an astrologer would give. For any couple, enter either person as Partner 1; most of the score does not depend on the order.

Do we need exact birth times?

Matching uses the Moon, which changes nakshatra roughly once a day, so the date alone is often enough. If either person was born near a nakshatra change, the time matters, and it is also needed for Mangal dosha from the ascendant.

Do different astrologers get different scores?

Sometimes, by a point or two. Traditions differ slightly in the Vashya, Gana and Graha Maitri tables and in whether a cancelled dosha restores its points. We follow the common North Indian scheme and show each koota so you can see exactly where the points come from.
