Two numbers from one date

In Indian (Vedic) numerology, your date of birth gives two key numbers. The Moolank (often spelled Mulank), also called the driver or root number, comes from the day alone. The Bhagyank, also called the conductor or fortune number, comes from the whole date.

A simple way to remember the difference: Moolank describes how you drive, meaning your instinctive personality, habits and reactions. Bhagyank describes where the road goes, meaning the larger pattern of opportunities, lessons and fortune that unfolds over your life. Most practitioners read the two together, and many consider how well they get along with each other to be just as important as either number on its own.

Read the full guide for each number: Mulank 1 to 9 and Bhagyank 1 to 9.

How to calculate Moolank

Take the day of the month you were born and add its digits until a single digit remains.

  • Born on the 7th: Moolank 7.
  • Born on the 14th: 1 + 4 = 5.
  • Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.

Unlike Western numerology, Vedic numerology does not keep master numbers here. Every Moolank is between 1 and 9, because each number is linked with one of the nine planets (navagraha).

How to calculate Bhagyank

Write out your full date of birth and add every digit. Let's use 14 March 1992:

  1. Write the date as digits: 14 / 03 / 1992.
  2. Add each digit: 1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 29.
  3. Reduce: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.

So this person has Moolank 5 and Bhagyank 2. The calculator shows both reductions step by step in your report.

The planetary associations

Each number from 1 to 9 is traditionally linked with a planet, and those links colour the interpretations:

NumberPlanetKey themes
1SunLeadership, confidence, independence
2MoonEmotion, imagination, care
3JupiterWisdom, teaching, growth
4RahuUnconventional thinking, sudden change, effort
5MercuryCommunication, trade, adaptability
6VenusLove, comfort, beauty, art
7KetuIntuition, spirituality, research
8SaturnDiscipline, patience, responsibility
9MarsCourage, energy, protection

These associations are traditional and vary slightly between teachers, particularly for 4 and 7, which relate to the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu.

How Moolank and Bhagyank relate

Vedic numerology uses a table of friendly, neutral and challenging relationships between numbers, much like the friendships between planets in astrology. AstroAnktara checks the relationship in both directions: how your Moolank sees your Bhagyank, and how your Bhagyank sees your Moolank.

In our example, Moolank 5 counts 2 as friendly, and Bhagyank 2 also counts 5 as friendly. That combination is usually described as smooth: the person's natural style supports the direction life tends to take.

When the relationship is challenging, readers often describe it as an inner tension. You may feel pulled between how you like to operate and what circumstances demand. That is not a bad outcome. Many accomplished people have exactly this pattern, and seeing it clearly can make choices easier.

Your report also lists the friendly, neutral and challenging numbers for your Moolank. Many people use these when choosing names, mobile numbers or important dates.

Using your numbers in practice

Moolank and Bhagyank are the starting point for most other Vedic numerology tools:

As with all numerology, treat the results as reflective guidance rather than rules. A "challenging" number is not something to fear, and a "friendly" one is not a guarantee.

FAQ

Moolank & Bhagyank Calculator FAQs

Is Mulank the same as Moolank?

Yes. Mulank, Moolank and Moolanka are different English spellings of the same Hindi word (मूलांक), meaning root number. It is also called the driver or psychic number. Bhagyank (भाग्यांक) is likewise sometimes written Bhagyanka.

What is the difference between Moolank and Bhagyank?

Moolank (driver number) comes from the day you were born and describes your everyday nature. Bhagyank (conductor or destiny number) comes from the full date and describes the overall direction of your life.

How do I calculate my Moolank?

Add the digits of your birth day until you get a single digit. Someone born on the 14th has Moolank 1 + 4 = 5. Someone born on the 29th has 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.

How do I calculate my Bhagyank?

Add every digit of your full date of birth and reduce to one digit. For 14 March 1992: 1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 29, then 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.

Are master numbers used for Moolank and Bhagyank?

No. In Vedic numerology both numbers are always reduced to 1–9, because each digit is linked with one of the nine planets. A total of 11 becomes 2.

Which planet rules my Moolank?

The commonly used associations are 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars.

What if my Moolank and Bhagyank are not friendly?

It is common and not a cause for worry. Many readers describe it as an inner tension between how you naturally act and where life pulls you, something to understand rather than fix.

Is this the same as my life path number?

Bhagyank and the Western life path both use the full birth date and usually share the same single digit. The life path keeps master numbers and reduces day, month and year separately, so the two can differ in detail.
