How to read your Vedic birth chart

Three things matter most in a first look at a Vedic chart. The rising sign (lagna) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born; it sets up the twelve houses and is read as your body, temperament and general direction in life. The Moon sign (rashi) describes your mind and emotions; in India it is the sign people usually mean when they ask “what is your rashi?”. And the birth star (nakshatra) is the Moon's exact lunar mansion, one of 27, which adds detail to your nature and sets the order of your planetary periods.

Houses

This calculator uses whole-sign houses: the rising sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. Each house covers an area of life, for example the 7th partnerships and the 10th career, and the planets in it colour that area.

Planets

Vedic astrology uses nine “grahas”: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, plus Rahu and Ketu, the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. A planet is traditionally strongest when exalted or in its own sign and weakest when debilitated; the table marks these, and shows which planets were retrograde.

North or South Indian style?

Both show the same chart. The North Indian diamond keeps the houses fixed and writes the sign numbers inside; the South Indian square keeps the signs fixed and marks your rising sign. Use whichever your family or astrologer uses.

FAQ

Vedic birth chart FAQs

What is a Vedic birth chart?

A Vedic birth chart, or kundli, is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were at the moment you were born, seen from your birthplace. Vedic (Jyotish) astrology reads it with the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned to the fixed stars, together with the 27 nakshatras and planetary periods called dashas.

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons, while Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Over the centuries the two have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so most people's planets fall one sign earlier in a Vedic chart. Neither is a mistake; they measure from different starting points.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For the rising sign (lagna) and houses, yes: the rising sign changes roughly every two hours, and near a sign's edge a few minutes matter. Without a time you still get your Moon sign, nakshatra (usually), planets and dasha periods, and the chart uses your Moon sign as the first house.

Which ayanamsa and settings do you use?

The Lahiri (Chitra Paksha) ayanamsa, mean lunar nodes for Rahu and Ketu and whole-sign houses, the defaults of most Indian astrologers. Planet positions are checked against established panchang software and agree to within an arcminute.

Is my birth data stored?

No. The chart is calculated in your browser. Only the text you type to search for your birth city is sent to our server, to find matching places; your date and time of birth never leave your device.

What is the Vimshottari dasha?

It is the most widely used system of planetary periods in Vedic astrology. A 120-year cycle is divided among the nine planets; where you start depends on the nakshatra your Moon was in at birth. The period you are in is said to colour the themes of that part of your life.
