Surya Beej Mantra: Meaning and How to Chant
The seed mantra of Sun, traditionally chanted on Sunday, with its meaning and a verse from the Navagraha Stotra.
ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः॥
Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah
Meaning of the Surya beej mantra
- ॐ (Om) is the primordial sound with which most Vedic mantras begin.
- ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं (Hraam Hreem Hraum) are beej (seed) syllables. They are not translated word for word; tradition treats them as the sound-form of Sun's energy, and सः (sah) seals the invocation.
- सूर्याय नमः (Suryaya Namah) means "salutations to Surya".
Why the Surya mantra is chanted
Surya, the Sun, is the king among the nine planets in Vedic astrology and the source of light, vitality and authority. His beej mantra is traditionally chanted for confidence, good health, recognition at work and a good relationship with one's father and with people in power, especially when the Sun is weak in a horoscope.
Surya verse from the Navagraha Stotra
This verse to Surya comes from the Navagraha Stotra attributed to the sage Vyasa. Many people recite it before or after the beej mantra.
