Birth date grid
Lo Shu Grid Calculator
Place your birth date digits on the Lo Shu magic square to see which numbers repeat, which are missing, and which planes are complete.
What the Lo Shu grid is
The Lo Shu square is a 3×3 arrangement of the numbers 1 to 9 in which every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15. According to Chinese legend it appeared on the shell of a turtle emerging from the Lo river, and it has been used for centuries in feng shui, calendar systems and, more recently, numerology.
The fixed layout looks like this:
In Lo Shu numerology, each position represents a quality: communication, intuition, imagination, discipline and so on. Your date of birth fills some positions and leaves others empty. The result is a quick visual summary of where your natural strengths sit and which areas may need more conscious attention.
How the grid is built
AstroAnktara follows the approach most common in Indian numerology:
- Take every digit of your date of birth and ignore zeros.
- Add your Moolank (driver number, from the day) and Bhagyank (conductor number, from the full date).
- Place each digit in its position on the square. If a digit appears more than once, it is written that many times in the same box.
Let's build the grid for 14 March 1992.
- Birth date digits: 1, 4, 3, 1, 9, 9, 2 (the zero in 03 is ignored).
- Moolank: 1 + 4 = 5.
- Bhagyank: 1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 29 → 11 → 2.
- All digits for the grid: 1, 4, 3, 1, 9, 9, 2, 5, 2.
That fills the grid as follows. The top row reads 4, 99, 22. The middle row reads 3, 5, and an empty box for 7. The bottom row has empty boxes for 8 and 6, with 11 in the middle. So 1, 2 and 9 each appear twice, while 6, 7 and 8 are missing.
Reading missing and repeated numbers
Each number has a theme. In the grid, its presence suggests an available strength, repetition suggests that strength is emphasised (sometimes too much), and its absence suggests an area for growth.
- 1 self-expression and communication
- 2 intuition and sensitivity
- 3 imagination and memory
- 4 organisation and discipline
- 5 emotional balance and willpower (the centre of the grid)
- 6 home, family and responsibility
- 7 learning through experience
- 8 attention to detail and practical management
- 9 ambition, intelligence and idealism
Your report explains each missing number in your grid and describes your most repeated numbers. Keep in mind that missing numbers are extremely common. Most grids have three or four empty boxes, and the interpretations are written as invitations to grow rather than as warnings.
A note on 9: almost everyone born between 1900 and 1999 has at least one 9 from the year. People born from 2000 onward often have no 9 at all, so a missing 9 is far more common in younger charts and carries less weight.
Planes and arrows
The rows, columns and diagonals of the grid are called planes or arrows. When all three numbers on a line are present, the plane is complete and is read as a well-developed area of life. When all three are missing, it is read as an area that may need support.
- Mental plane (4-9-2): thinking, planning and memory
- Emotional plane (3-5-7): feeling, sensitivity and spirituality
- Practical plane (8-1-6): material and physical skill
- Thought plane (4-3-8): planning before acting
- Will plane (9-5-1): determination and persistence
- Action plane (2-7-6): turning ideas into action
- Golden arrow (4-5-6) and silver arrow (2-5-8): the two diagonals, often described in Indian numerology as especially fortunate when complete
In our example, the mental plane (4, 9, 2) and the will plane (9, 5, 1) are both complete, suggesting a sharp, organised mind backed by determination.
Differences between practitioners
Lo Shu numerology has several schools, and you may see slightly different grids elsewhere. The most common differences are:
- whether the Moolank is added when the birth day is a single digit (some add it only for days 10 to 31, to avoid counting the same digit twice)
- whether the Bhagyank is added at all
- the exact names and interpretations of planes
AstroAnktara always adds both numbers and shows the driver and conductor at the top of the report, so you can mentally remove them if your teacher uses a different rule.
What to do with your grid
Use the grid as a map of tendencies. If 4 is missing, for example, a simple weekly planning habit may make a real difference. If 5 is repeated, notice whether strong willpower occasionally turns into stubbornness. Combine the grid with your Moolank and Bhagyank for a fuller picture, or compare a phone number's digits with your grid using the mobile number numerology tool.

FAQ
Lo Shu Grid Calculator FAQs
What is the Lo Shu grid?
It is a 3×3 magic square from ancient Chinese tradition in which every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15. In numerology, the digits of your birth date are placed into it to see which numbers you have, which repeat and which are missing.
Why are Moolank and Bhagyank added to the grid?
The Indian approach to Lo Shu numerology adds your driver (Moolank) and conductor (Bhagyank) numbers to the birth date digits, as they are considered central to your chart. Some practitioners only add the driver when the birth day is 10 or more.
What happens to zeros in my date of birth?
Zeros are ignored because the grid only has positions for 1 to 9.
Are missing numbers bad?
No. Almost everyone has missing numbers. They are read as qualities that may need conscious effort, not as flaws. Repeated numbers are read as strengths that can also be overdone.
What are planes and arrows?
Planes are the rows, columns and diagonals of the grid. When all three numbers of a plane are present it is called complete and is read as a strength in that area, such as thinking, emotion or practical skill.
Can I fix missing numbers?
Some practitioners suggest remedies such as colours, objects or name changes. AstroAnktara focuses on understanding the pattern; the most practical approach is to build the related skill or habit deliberately.
