Amavasya is the thirtieth tithi of the lunar month, the new moon, which ends the dark half (Krishna paksha). It is the day for shraddha and tarpan for the ancestors, charity and remedies. An Amavasya on a Monday is Somvati Amavasya, and one on a Saturday is Shani Amavasya. Mauni Amavasya (Magha), Sarva Pitru Amavasya and Diwali (Kartika) fall on these new moons, though each has its own timing rules.

The Amavasya day is the one on which Amavasya is current at sunrise. For shraddha, Darsha Amavasya is sometimes a day earlier: when Amavasya has begun by the end of the previous afternoon (aparahna). The table shows both.

Times are IST for New Delhi. Sunrise-based dates can differ by a day in other cities, so check a local panchang if you live far from Delhi.
