Glory to Ambe Gauri, on whom Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva meditate day and night. The aarti pictures her with sindoor in her parting, golden body and red robes, riding the lion with sword in hand, slayer of Shumbha, Nishumbha, Mahishasura, Chanda, Munda, Raktabeej, Madhu and Kaitabha; she is Brahmani, Rudrani and Lakshmi, mother and sustainer of the world. Whoever sings it, says Swami Shivanand, gains happiness and prosperity.
About this aarti
It pictures the Mother with sindoor in her parting, a golden body, red robes and a garland of red flowers, riding the lion with sword in hand; it recalls her victories over Shumbha, Nishumbha, Mahishasura, Chanda, Munda, Raktabeej, Madhu and Kaitabha, and hails her as Brahmani, Rudrani and Lakshmi, mother and sustainer of the world.
How to do aarti
- Light a lamp of ghee (or camphor) on a plate, with flowers, a little rice and incense.
- Ring a small bell and wave the plate in clockwise circles before the deity while singing: traditionally four times at the feet, twice at the navel, once at the face and seven times over the whole image.
- After the aarti, pass your hands over the flame and touch them to your eyes and forehead, and share the prasad.
