Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of each half of the lunar month and one of the most important fasts in the worship of Vishnu. There are usually 24 Ekadashis in a year, and 26 in a year with an adhika (extra) month; each has its own name and story.
The fasting day is set by sunrise: you fast on the day when Ekadashi is current at sunrise. When Ekadashi covers two sunrises, Smartas fast on the second day; when Dwadashi would not reach the next sunrise, the fast moves a day earlier so it can be broken during Dwadashi. Vaishnavas (ISKCON) avoid an Ekadashi touched by Dashami at arunodaya, 96 minutes before sunrise.
Parana, breaking the fast, is done the next day after sunrise and before Dwadashi ends, but only after Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi. The preferred time is pratahkal, the first fifth of the day; if Hari Vasara runs past it, midday (madhyahna) is avoided and parana moves to the afternoon (aparahna). The table gives that window for every Ekadashi.
Times are IST for New Delhi. Sunrise-based dates can differ by a day in other cities, so check a local panchang if you live far from Delhi.

FAQ
Ekadashi FAQs
When should I break the Ekadashi fast?
The next day, after sunrise, after Hari Vasara has passed and before Dwadashi ends. Parana is not done during Hari Vasara. The table gives the window for each Ekadashi.
What is the difference between Smarta and Vaishnava Ekadashi?
Most of the time they fall on the same day. When Dashami touches Ekadashi at arunodaya, or Ekadashi lasts across two sunrises, the Vaishnava (ISKCON) fast can be a day later. Those days are shown separately in the table.
Are these dates right for my city?
They are calculated from sunrise at New Delhi and checked against established panchangs. They hold for most of India, but far from Delhi, especially abroad, the difference in sunrise can move the fasting day by one day.
