Dhanteras, or Dhantrayodashi, is the Krishna Trayodashi of Kartika (Ashwina in the amanta calendar), usually two days before Diwali and the first day of the five-day festival. It is also Dhanvantari Jayanti, the birth of the physician of the gods, and the day for Lakshmi and Kuber puja.

Like Lakshmi Puja on Diwali, the Dhanteras puja is done in Pradosh Kaal on the day Trayodashi prevails at that time, and the best window is when the fixed Vrishabha lagna is rising.

In the evening a lamp is lit for Yama outside the home, facing south (Yama Deepam), to protect the family from untimely death. Buying gold, silver, new utensils or a broom on Dhanteras is a widely followed tradition, and many people shop while Trayodashi lasts.

Times for Indian cities are Indian Standard Time; times abroad are local time. They match established panchangs to within a minute or two. For a city not listed, the nearest city is usually within a few minutes.
