Each city's timings use its own sunrise, sunset, moonrise and lagna, in local time with daylight saving where it applies. The tithi is judged by local sunrise and sunset, so the festival can fall on a different date abroad than in India.

Karwa Chauth is kept on Krishna Chaturthi of Kartika (Ashwina in the amanta calendar), four days after Sharad Purnima. Married women fast from sunrise without food or water for their husband's long life, and break the fast at night after seeing the Moon and offering it arghya. Many unmarried women keep it too, for a good match.

The fast falls on the day Chaturthi is current at moonrise, because it ends with the Moon. After sunset, Gauri, Shiva, Ganesha and Kartikeya are worshipped with the karwa (a clay pot) and the story of Veeravati, and then the Moon and the husband are seen through a sieve.

Moonrise depends on the place, so it is given here for 15 cities. It is the time the Moon's centre reaches the horizon; where hills or tall buildings block the view, the Moon appears a few minutes later.

Times for Indian cities are Indian Standard Time; times abroad are local time. They match established panchangs to within a minute or two. For a city not listed, the nearest city is usually within a few minutes.

The traditional fast is nirjala: no food or water from sunrise until the Moon is seen. Women who are pregnant, unwell or on medication often keep a lighter fast with water or fruit; follow your family's custom and your doctor's advice.

What if clouds hide the Moon?

Why does the Moon rise at different times in each city?

The Moon rises in the east, so eastern cities such as Kolkata and Patna see it about an hour before western ones such as Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Latitude makes a smaller difference.
