Moolank and Bhagyank Explained: Driver & Conductor
What Moolank and Bhagyank mean in Vedic numerology, how to calculate both from your birth date, and why their relationship matters.
Published · 6 min read
Ask an Indian numerologist about your numbers and the first two you'll hear are your Moolank and Bhagyank. Together they form the foundation of Vedic numerology: almost every other calculation, from lucky names to mobile numbers, is compared against them.
This article explains what each number represents, how to work them out by hand, and how to read them together.
Moolank: the driver
Moolank (मूलांक) roughly means "root number". It is also called the driver number or psychic number, and it comes from just one part of your date of birth: the day.
To calculate it, add the digits of your birth day until a single digit remains:
- Born on the 5th → 5
- Born on the 23rd → 2 + 3 = 5
- Born on the 29th → 2 + 9 = 11 → 1 + 1 = 2
Your Moolank is read as your instinctive personality, the way you naturally think, react and approach everyday situations. It's the "you" that shows up before you've had time to think.
Bhagyank: the conductor
Bhagyank (भाग्यांक) means "fortune number". It's also called the conductor number or destiny number, and it uses your entire date of birth.
Add every digit of the full date and reduce. For 29 April 1990:
2 + 9 + 0 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 34 → 3 + 4 = 7
Bhagyank is read as the direction of your life, the kind of opportunities, lessons and turning points that tend to come your way. If Moolank is the driver, Bhagyank is the route.
No master numbers here
Western numerology keeps 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers. Vedic numerology doesn't. Every Moolank and Bhagyank is reduced all the way to 1–9, because each digit corresponds to one of the nine planets:
- 1 Sun · 2 Moon · 3 Jupiter · 4 Rahu · 5 Mercury
- 6 Venus · 7 Ketu · 8 Saturn · 9 Mars
Those planetary associations shape the interpretations. Moolank 1 (Sun) is often described as confident and leadership-oriented, while Moolank 2 (Moon) is described as sensitive and imaginative. Each number has its own guide: see Mulank 1 to 9 and Bhagyank 1 to 9. Many people also chant the beej mantra of their number's planet, such as the Shani mantra for 8.
Reading the two together
The most interesting insights often come from comparing the two numbers. Vedic numerology uses a table of friendly, neutral and challenging relationships between numbers, much like the friendships between planets in astrology.
When they are friendly, your natural style tends to support the direction your life takes. For example, Moolank 5 with Bhagyank 2: Mercury and the Moon are generally considered compatible, and 5 counts 2 among its friendly numbers.
When they are challenging, you may feel a tension between how you like to operate and what life asks of you. Take the example above, Moolank 2 with Bhagyank 7: in the common table 2 and 7 are challenging for each other. That doesn't predict trouble. It suggests that growth comes from learning to work with two different energies, the sensitive Moon and the introspective Ketu.
Many people find this comparison more useful than either number alone, because it puts words to an inner experience they already recognise.
How Moolank and Bhagyank are used
Once you know your two numbers, they become the reference point for other choices:
- Names: a name whose number is friendly to your Moolank and Bhagyank is considered favourable. You can test this with the lucky name checker.
- Mobile numbers: the same comparison applies to a phone number's digit total. See mobile number numerology.
- Lo Shu grid: both numbers are added to your birth date digits on the magic square. Try the Lo Shu grid calculator.
- Dates: some people pick dates for important events whose day number is friendly to their Moolank.
Moolank, Bhagyank and the life path
If you've read about Western numerology, Bhagyank may remind you of the life path number. Both use the full date of birth, and they usually share the same single digit. The difference is in method: the Western life path reduces the day, month and year separately and keeps master numbers, while Bhagyank adds all digits at once and always reduces to 1–9. For most dates the two agree; for some they differ by a master number.
