The nine-year cycle
Numerology describes life as moving through repeating nine-year cycles. Each year in the cycle has its own character, from the fresh starts of a 1 year to the endings of a 9 year. Your personal year number tells you where you are in that cycle right now.
Because everyone's cycle starts at a different point, two people living through the same calendar year can be in completely different personal years. One may be planting seeds while another is harvesting or clearing space. That's what makes the personal year a useful planning tool: it describes the kind of effort that tends to feel most natural this year.
How to calculate your personal year
The formula uses your birth day, your birth month and the current calendar year.
- Take your birth day and birth month.
- Add the digits of the calendar year you are interested in and reduce them.
- Add everything together and reduce to a single digit, keeping master numbers.
Example: someone born on 29 April, looking at 2026:
- Birth day: 29
- Birth month: 4
- Year: 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10 → 1
- Total: 29 + 4 + 1 = 34 → 3 + 4 = 7
So 2026 is a personal year 7 for this person, a reflective year of study and inner work.
Personal month and personal day
The cycle continues at smaller scales:
- Personal month = personal year + calendar month, reduced. For October 2026 (month 10): 7 + 10 = 17 → 8.
- Personal day = personal month + calendar day, reduced. For 14 October 2026: 8 + 14 = 22, which is kept as a master number.
Personal months add colour to the year's theme, and personal days are popular for timing meetings, launches and other important events.
What each personal year brings
- 1 new beginnings, initiative and planting seeds
- 2 patience, partnerships and quiet progress
- 3 creativity, social life and self-expression
- 4 hard work, structure and building foundations
- 5 change, travel and freedom
- 6 home, family, love and responsibility
- 7 reflection, learning and rest
- 8 achievement, money and recognition
- 9 completion, release and generosity

When does the year change?
There are two conventions:
- Calendar method (used here): your personal year changes on 1 January along with the calendar.
- Birthday method: your personal year changes on your birthday.
Both are widely used. AstroAnktara uses the calendar method by default. If you prefer the birthday method and your birthday hasn't happened yet this year, use the "calculate for date" field to check the previous year's number. Many people find that the months between New Year and their birthday feel like a blend of the two years.
Using your personal year
Personal years are most useful as a planning lens. In a 1 year, it makes sense to start the project you've been postponing. In a 4 year, focus on systems, finances and health routines. In a 7 year, give yourself permission to slow down, study and recharge rather than force growth. In a 9 year, finish and clear before the new cycle begins.
You can combine this with your life path number, which describes the larger journey, or your Moolank and Bhagyank for a Vedic perspective.

FAQ
Personal Year Calculator FAQs
What is a personal year number?
It is a number from 1 to 9 (or master 11, 22 or 33) that shows where you are in a repeating nine-year cycle. It is calculated from your birth day and month plus the current calendar year.
When does a personal year start?
AstroAnktara follows the common Western convention that personal years run from 1 January to 31 December. Some practitioners start the new personal year on your birthday instead; if you follow that method, use the 'calculate for date' field to check either side of your birthday.
How is the personal month calculated?
Add the calendar month number to your personal year number and reduce. A personal year 7 in October (month 10) gives 7 + 10 = 17, which reduces to 8.
What is a personal day?
Add the calendar day to your personal month number and reduce. It is the shortest cycle and is often used for picking dates for meetings or launches.
Is a personal year 9 bad?
No. It is a year of completion, a natural time to finish projects and let go of what no longer fits before a new cycle begins with personal year 1.
Can I check future years?
Yes. The report shows the next three years automatically, and you can pick any date in the 'calculate for date' field.
